There is a huge discrepancy between men and women on the mission field. With all the gender conversations taking place in the world today, women are stepping up to the plate and making a difference in the world. Micah Wood says that most boys/men are busy playing. He calls it the “Peter Pan Complex.” Guys are still “playing with their toys,” he says. It’s not just about adulting. Micah says that there’s a genuine doubt inside the male psyche. Thoughts like, Am I going to be good enough? Can I live up to this responsibility? Can I succeed? Will I be successful? The pure missions call is, in fact, attractive to the masculine heart. The world needs to hear the masculine voice of men standing against injustice. Will you be one of them?

Wave after wave of young people rush to the mission field on short-term trips but there are no shortcuts to community transformation. Social justice warriors need to realize that faithfulness on mission is the only way to create eternal change. Forget the microwave mentality. Zeal without wisdom is fleeting. Get in this thing for the long haul!

Micah Wood is totally for short-term mission trips. But the power of short-term trips are like a runner sprinting to the finish line. There’s a big difference between the short-term experience and long-term missionary efforts, which is more of a marathon. There must be an ongoing, long-term focus for every exposure trip. That’s how communities transform.

There are striking similarities between the Missionary Generation and today’s Millennials and Generation Z. David Joannes writes about this in his book, The Mind of a Missionary. There is a good reason to champion these generations. But Micah Wood provides some keys to thriving on mission that we may have overlooked.

Missionary mentorship. It’s integral to missional efforts, but so few missionaries have someone who can show them the ropes. Zeal is great but it needs to be tempered with wisdom. Do you have a mentor on your missions journey? There is safety and longevity in a mentor and mentee relationship.

Courageous humility is a necessary component of every missional effort. Be willing to step out with passion and boldness, but recognize that you need mentors to help you thrive and succeed in your calling.
