Missions Pulse 033: Greg Livingstone

1024 640 David Joannes

On this episode of Missions Pulse, David Joannes interviews Greg Livingstone, founder of Frontiers, a mission agency that began nearly four decades ago. Frontiers seeks to inspire transformational movements to Christ within unengaged Muslim people groups by sending teams to catalyze change because even the most uncharted frontiers need Jesus.

This legacy interview will inspire you to see a bigger picture of God at work in the nations.

Greg talks about the early formation of Frontiers, his relationship with George Verwer (and the founding of Operation Mobilisation), the integral role of teams on the mission field, and catching the heart of God for the Islamic world.

It’s a myth that God only uses the creme of the crop in the Christian Church. He has always used weak and unassuming people who know how to press on and keep Jesus first. At the same time, joining a team is better than going at it alone in your missionary calling.

Greg Livingstone’s first prayer meeting was a doozy. As soon as he arrived, George Verwer (who later founded Operation Mobilisation or OM) said, “You’ve Got Libya!” Greg ended up learning how to pray for the nations, found the love of his life, and later founded Frontiers. It all goes to show that small moments in time carry eternal value… That and a little tough love.

Greg Livingstone is a total missions history buff. He talks about how Muslims were confused by what masqueraded as Christianity in the 1860s. How does history like this impact us today? What do we need to do differently? He explains that there is a strong need for foreign expats who shine the light of the Gospel from an outside perspective.

It’s one thing to love your country. It’s another thing to elevate patriotism and nationalism above the Kingdom of God. Greg Livingstone says he doesn’t think that this stance isn’t even Biblical. What do you say?

Muslims are often painted in a negative light in Western media. That’s why so few Christians have Muslim friends or go to Muslim nations to share the Gospel. But Greg Livingstone doesn’t think they’re scary at all. He’s more terrified of tribal people with a history of cannibalism. What do you think about this crazy banter?

A small percentage of Muslims are giving the Islamic population a bad rap. The reality is, says Frontiers founder Greg Livingstone, there are a lot of nominal Muslims. They’re just normal people trying to get by. In fact, this reality paints a better portrait of Muslims worldwide. Most are not radicals and all are in need of a Savior.

Greg Livingstone thinks it’s one of the most satisfying things in the world to share the Gospel with someone who has never heard of Jesus before. If God fits you to be a missionary, don’t stoop to be a king.

Teams are a powerful aspect of cross-cultural missions. Frontiers founder, Greg Livingstone, says that this is a key component of disciple-making and church planting. The five-fold ministry is integral to the missions venture.
