Missions Pulse 19: J. D. Payne

1024 576 David Joannes

Church planting is not just about gathering new communities of people who are already Christians. In the book of Acts, church plants begin with sharing the Gospel. Planting churches flow naturally out of making disciples.

In fact, in Apostolic Church Planting, J. D. Payne writes:

“The weight of the biblical evidence is that churches should be birthed from the harvest fields. Biblical church planting is evangelism that results in new churches, not the shifting of sheep around the kingdom.”

In this episode of Missions Pulse, David Joannes interviews J. D. Payne, an Associate Professor of Christian Ministry at Samford University, former pastor at The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, the author of 10 books (including Apostolic Church Planting), and the host of a popular podcast called Strike the Match.

J. D. helps lay the groundwork as we talk about the difference between pastoral missiology and apostolic missiology, and how they impact our efforts in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Our theology shapes our missiology. Our missiology shapes our missionary methods. How we begin the journey affects what we do in the field. The need of the hour is for the Church in the West to embrace both a pastoral and an apostolic missiology.
