Yonas Demeke says that “The Gospel incarnated into the culture is the most powerful way to penetrate and change a community.” But there is a dissonance between the Christian culture and the culture of Ethiopia that Yonas expounds upon. We are, after all, in the world but not of it, and yet Jesus sends us back into the culture to be light and life.
Yonas Demeke describes the four faith encounters that God gave to Ethiopia: the Queen of Sheba, the Ethiopian eunuch, the Ethiopian Coptic Church, and Western evangelical missionaries at the turn of the 20th century. He provides a brief history of Ethiopia and gracefully tells the good and the bad that took place throughout time.
For generations, Ethiopia has been receiving missionaries from around the world. But the mission fields of the past are now becoming a missions force. With a population of 105 million people, there are 24 million Christians in Ethiopia. Yet 32 people groups are still waiting for a Gospel witness. But the Ethiopian Youth Mission Movement also desires to carry the Gospel across borders to the neighboring nations: Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, and Kenya. Yonas Demeke wants to see every Ethiopian Christian mobilized for mission.
It’s time to be united and reach the nation for Christ! That’s Yonas Demeke’s encouragement for his fellow Ethiopian countrymen. The doors are open wide. It’s time to walk through them with boldness!
