Sonnie directs an orphan family support group comprised of individuals between the ages of 15-35 years old who have lost their birth parents due mainly to HIV and AIDS. She is passionate about reshaping the negative stigma surrounding the word “orphan.” She helps inspire orphaned young people to become catalysts in their areas of influence.

Sonnie Gitonga talks about the birth of her ministry, Scars to Stars. She explains how the word “orphan” carries a negative stigma. But that’s something we need to see beyond. An orphan is simply someone who does not have a mother and a father, not someone who is needy. This empowering message is transforming lives throughout Nairobi.
You don’t tell the Potter what kind of vessel to make and what to do with the final product. He knows how to fashion beauty from brokenness. Sonnie Gitonga says that the two books in the Bible named after women—Esther and Ruth—you realize that God chooses orphans and broken people to change nations.
Adoption is a microcosm of the Gospel. Life comes with pain and joy. Like the Disney film, Inside Out, sadness tinges every joy with a bit of sorrow. That is the life we now experience but one day God will wipe away every tear. The narrative is much fuller with the blend of joy and sadness.
Learn to see beyond your present circumstances to understand the bigger picture as God sees it. Then you will find that the things that God allows to take place happen for a divine purpose.
