Hi. My name is David Joannes.

I am the co-founder and president of Within Reach Global, which serves the advance of the Gospel in some of Southeast Asia’s most difficult places.

This year, I am reading a book per week to keep my mind inspired and on the cutting edge of leadership and innovation. You might like the book reviews I write for every book I complete.

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, Vimeo, and Youtube.

I have a love for language, culture, and creative writing, and for the last 20 years, I have witnessed God’s Kingdom established in forgotten parts of the globe. I am passionate about the 10/40 Window, unreached people groups, the Great Commission, and all things missions. The fact that over 2 billion people have yet to hear the name of Jesus does not sit well with me.

I am always looking for more people to join our team of Within Reach Global Vision Partners, and lower us down into the goldmine of souls in Southeast Asia. I’m also looking for missions-minded volunteers who are passionate about the nations.

I blog about global missions trends and updates about the ministry we are involved with here in Asia. In my book and blogs, I say things like this:

“Sometimes I am a hero. Most often I am a failure.”

And this:

“I learned that the missionary endeavor was a slow death to self. Jesus had not promised His disciples that bringing His message of grace and glory would be an easy task. He had promised that He would send His Holy Spirit as an ever-present help in time of need; that His footprints would line the path alongside ours.”

And this:

“I’ve heard it said that God gives beauty for ashes. So, too, He evokes holy calling from unassuming spots, pulling passion from the profane, wringing vision from vile waters. He is in the business of transformation, of altering atmospheres, taking the squalid and making it exquisite.”

Over the last 20 years of missionary service among the poor and marginalized I have come to realize that God loves to use unassuming misfits to display His glory to the ends of the earth.

I began my missionary journey by smuggling Bibles into China. I have been interrogated for my faith over 20 times. Occasionally I have hid from the authorities under the sway of bamboo and the dim glow of moonlight. I have eaten meals with headhunters and have shared the Gospel with tribal witchdoctors. I have been apprehended by over 100 child soldiers carrying AK-47s and have journeyed to some of the world’s most forgotten regions.

But in the thick of such precarious situations, I have also seen the Kingdom of God established among unreached and unnamed people groups. I have witnessed secret baptisms, taught at underground Bible trainings, and raised up a group of local missionaries who are planting churches among hard to reach animist, Islamic, atheist, and Buddhist tribes.

After many years in China, my family and I relocated to Chiang Mai, Thailand because of its strategic location and Gospel opportunities. We continue to minister among unreached people groups, praying that God would use our lives to bring many more into His Kingdom.

Occasionally I guest post for Christian missions-related websites and podcasts. Here’s a few of the podcasts and articles I have done:
