Missions Pulse 22: Matthew Ellison

It’s easy to become dismayed at the state of the Church’s missions interest. In many ways, we have taken the final command of Jesus—the Great Commission—and marginalized it by our lack of obedience. We push the things that are dear to God’s heart to the fringes of our lives.

But there is always a remnant—passionate Christ-followers who make it their primary purpose to finish the task that our Lord gave us.

We naturally gravitate to the things in our sphere of influence. It’s understandable. This is the world we live in: our neighborhood. And it requires a great amount of intentionality to care about people who are distant from you, who are not culturally like you. It doesn’t naturally happen. We naturally just focus on ourselves. That’s how we’re wired.

If we’re going to be a part of a church that is embracing the call to reach the nations, it doesn’t just happen. It’s the result of conscious decisions. We can be part of that historical ingathering of worshipers from all nations. We don’t want to miss out.

We should be making disciples of our neighbors. Yes! But we can’t stop there. If we do, we gut the mandate. It’s not just about your neighbors. It’s also about the nations.

In this episode of Missions Pulse, David Joannes interviews Matthew Ellison, president of Sixteen:Fifteen, co-author of When Everything is Missions, and host at The Mission Table. Matthew reveals striking contrasts between the church in Jerusalem and the church at Antioch, revealing 7 keys to unlocking your church’s missions potential.
